Haiku – Volume 1

For no good reason, I started writing and tweeting haikus.  It started one night while I was wide awake at 3 AM and feeling rather annoyed about that. I don’t consider myself a poetry expert but I find these little poems interesting because they are like the Twitter of poetry which makes them challenging to create. Just in case my blog will someday be used as a manifesto for a peaceful, loving, society I figured I should collect my poems here. It’s the least I can to save the world.

Siren

Child’s night cry siren,
Sleep flees into the darkness,
Return oh rest please.
Demands

Eyelids ache with need,
The mind demands peacefulness,
Heart of restlessness.

Misdirection

Exhaust mind to tire,
Distract the heart to bring sleep,
Haiku not helping.
Satisfaction

Dream her coming morn,
Position of submission,
Multiple day breaks.

Focus

I’ve been going through the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians. I’m currently meditating on chapter six, verses 12-13*.

It seems easy to find people who struggle against the truth that the cross alone saves. There is a tendency to place self-righteousness with the cross of Christ, maybe sometimes over it. With it come accusations against those who share God’s grace alone, calling it “sloppy agape.” These are those who, when you talk about God’s amazing grace, always say, “Yes, but…”

Is it possible that the issue Paul is writing about is still happening today? That means when we encounter the “Yes, but…” people it’s not so much about theology but about using behaviour as a crutch to avoid being “persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save”?

And what about the second part? What happens if we observe those who lift high the behaviour perfection banner? Do we also notice that the focus on behaviour is not all encompassing but fairly? Is it also true the driving motive for that focus is not the best interests of the person they are trying to convince, but is the puffing up of their own ego?

* Galatians 6:12 Those who are trying to force you to be circumcised want to look good to others. They don’t want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ alone can save. 13 And even those who advocate circumcision don’t keep the whole law themselves. They only want you to be circumcised so they can boast about it and claim you as their disciples.

Law of Love

One of my most favourite devotional books is called, “Steps to Jesus.” I just started re-reading it again and something jumped out at me.
“God made Adam and Eve perfectly holy and happy. The earth was beautiful as it came from the Creator’s hand. Nothing was spoiled or dying. But Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s law—His law of love. Disobedience brought sadness and death. Yet God showed His love even when sin was causing suffering. – {STJ 3.4}”

I think it’s interesting that the author emphasized “law of love.” It seems to me, that we often stop at “disobeyed God’s law;” Adam and Eve did a bad thing; we see it purely behaviourally. They did bad, we do bad, we’re in legal trouble for breaking the law.

And yet, with the emphasis on law of love, to me, this makes it purely a relationship break down. That in turn means that as God seeks you and encourages you to come back home, he’s not fixing a legal problem but a relational problem.

Does that change the way you relate to God?
